Auditory Processing Disorder

Contact

Option 1

  • Bay Audiology Invercargill Phone 2171940
  • Bay Audiology Gore Phone 035545119

Important information: Bay Audiology start assessing from 7 years of age and above. The assessment for Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) offered by Bay Audiology is not the full assessment. The Bay Audiology process gives a very good indication if APD is present. This process gives enough information for parents and schools to know if APD is present and to look at what remediation options are available as well as accommodations to make in the classroom. Children can receive assistance from the Ministry of Education for APD if they have severe auditory processing difficulties.

  • Flowchart showing the assessment process.

Other information

Sound Skills NZ in Auckland is highly qualified at diagnosing APD and have an informative website.

Remediation options for parents

Options available (in no certain order)

1. Bay Audiology software - Feather Squadron

These are online auditory training games. They cost $250 for one or $350 for all the games. You are given a code by Bay Audiology and log on at home to gain access to the games. Bay Audiology reassess for APD after three months use of these training games.

2. Hearbuilder Program

This program uses games in four areas: Following Directions, Phonological Awareness, Auditory Memory and Sequencing. These programs can be played on a tablet or computer. There is a cost $59 per year (US dollars) which you can get as a CD Rom or a subscription. There is a free trial option available. This program is being used in schools in Reporoa when they have identified children with APD. They do not have data yet on the effectiveness of using this program but hope to in the new year.

3. Fast Forword with Fast LearningNZ

This is a computer based program that works to improve auditory processing using activities tailored to the child’s ability. This is Southland based and support is provided as the child works through the activities.
